One of BMW’s most beloved nameplates is about to make a comeback.
The German luxury marque is expected to bring the 6 Series back to the U.S. following a more than half-decade absence, according to Automotive News. To make room for the model, the brand may do away with several current vehicles, including the XM plug-in hybrid.
The 6 Series was launched all the way back in 1979 as BMW’s flagship coupé. This may be the way that most people remember it, but the car has also been offered as a convertible since its second generation, and as a four-door Gran Coupe fastback and Gran Turismo hatchback since its third. As the marque’s lineup grew, the 6 Series lost some of its luster, though, and in 2019 it was discontinued stateside.

An anonymous supply-chain industry source tells the paper that the 6 Series will make its return in late 2026. The car will launch as a two-door coupe and convertible and will utilize BMW’s Cluster Architecture, which supports gas, hybrid, and electric powertrains. It’ll likely be produced in small numbers, with the target being discerning drivers who appreciate luxury as much as performance.
“Mainstream cars are popular, but we should have the niche cars as well,” an unnamed dealer told Automotive News. “BMW is trying to get in alignment on what customers are looking for.”
BMW did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Robb Report.
The automaker’s U.S. lineup may be about to gain a model, but it could lose a few as well. The XM plug-in hybrid may have only gone on sale last year but already appears destined for a quiet death. There are no longer plans to build an all-electric version of the warthog-like SUV. As things stand, production of the vehicle is set to end in 2028.
The newspaper also reports that the new 6 Series will launch around the same time as the gas-powered 4 Series and 8 Series coupés are set to be discontinued. The next-generation 4 Series is expected to go all-electric, while there appear to be no plans to replace the 8 Series, which has struggled to gain traction with drivers since it was reintroduced at the beginning of the decade.
