Ford’s Newest Bronco Wants to Take You Baja Racing—in 1973

Ford’s latest Bronco pays tribute to its racing past.

The Detroit giant has just a new announced a new variant of its popular off-roader called the Stroppe Special Edition for the 2025 model year. The colorful model takes inspiration from the Stroppe Baja Broncos that raced across the desert of the Mexican peninsula in the 1960s and ’70s.

The new Bronco—although it’s no longer all that new, having been introduced all the way back in 2020—has been a throwback since the beginning. The SUV returned following a 25-year absence with the same boxy shape and elevated stance that had made it an icon. In its second year of production, Ford even introduced a Heritage Edition variant that included a retro-style paint job and rims to further highlight this.

Two years later, nostalgia remains a huge part of the reintroduced Bronco’s charm. The latest model is named after Bill Stroppe, who took factory examples of the 4×4 and modified them for use in off-road races like the Baja 1000 and NORRA Mexican 1000, helping establish the vehicle’s racing legacy along the way.

The new variant is based on the two-door Bronco Wildtrak. Each example features a three-tone livery that combines Atlas Blue, Oxford White, and Code Orange (marking the first time the color has been available on a model other than the Raptor). Adding to the racing-style feel are a matte black hood and tailgate, a white grille, and Bronco graphics above the rear fenders, as well as a set of black 17-inch rims wrapped in chunky 35-inch Goodyear Territor RT tires. The interior details are a tad more understated, but there’s a white dash, plenty of Code Orange accents, and a plaque identifying the special edition that makes use of the Bronco font from the era.

The Wildtrak’s feature list makes the Stroppe Special Edition plenty capable. It’s powered by a 2.7-liter Ecoboost V-6 that makes 330 hp and 415 ft lbs of torque that is routed to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox. It also features a HOSS 3.0 off-road suspension and a standard stabilizer bar disconnect to help deliver the kind of off-roading experience enthusiasts expect from a Bronco.

Ford has yet to announce how many examples of the Bronco Stroppe Special Edition will be built, but the model will be available come early 2025. It also hasn’t revealed how much the model will cost, though something north of the standard Wildtrak’s $60,225 starting price seems like a safe bet.
