‘Long, Fume-Free, and Quiet’: F1 Champ Fernando Alonso Is Psyched About His New All-Electric Catamaran

It sounds like Fernando Alonso’s new catamaran performs as well as his Aston Martin AMR23.

The two-time Formula 1 champ only recently received his custom 60 Sunreef Power Eco but decided to promptly put it to the test on the high seas. It didn’t disappoint, either.

“The 60 Sunreef Power Eco gave me exactly the yachting experience I was looking for,” the Spanish racer said in a statement.

Alonso signed the contract for the electric cat on September 1, 2021. He was highly engaged in the build and paid numerous visits to Sunreef’s shipyard in Gdansk, Poland. He also took a bigger 80-foot model for a test spin while waiting for his own 60-footer. Evidently, it was worth the two-year wait.

“Long, fume-free, and quiet cruises let you enjoy the seas on a whole new level,” Alonso explained. “This yacht has some amazing technology that cannot be found anywhere else.”

The full-beam bow terrace provides ample space for lounging.

The multihull is equipped with electric motors that allow it to cruise smoothly and silently sans emissions. It also features a “solar skin” that can generate power from the sun’s rays. All that energy is then stored in an ultra-light battery bank, ensuring a continuous supply of clean power.

The zero-emissions cruiser looks good, too, with sleek, clean lines creating an elegant silhouette. Onboard, standout features include a vast aft cockpit with a swim platform and aft garage, as well as a full-beam bow terrace and a generous flybridge. To top it off, the spacious interior can comfortably accommodate 12 guests and four crew. Alonso took both his family and friends on his recent yachting holiday, in fact.

“On board, all that matters is peace of mind, fresh air, and good company,” he added. “Yachting should not be about ego. For me, it’s about sharing good moments and being respectful towards the environment.”

The Aston Martin driver isn’t Sunreef’s only high-profile ambassador, though. Tennis superstar Rafael Nadal took delivery of his Sunreef 80 Power Great White in 2020. Apparently, the Polish yard knows how to reel in the Spanish athletes. Carlos Alcaraz next?
