TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper
Arguably better known for its connection to motor racing, TAG Heuer offers a timely reminder of its legacy in yachting now and then with distinctive timepieces such as the new Skipper chronograph. Launched in 1968, the Skipper was commissioned to commemorate the victory of the Intrepid in the America’s Cup of 1967, for which the watchmaker, then just “Heuer” before its acquisition, provided the winning yacht and its crew with stopwatches and wristwatches. Though the last full production was released in 1983, the Skipper is now back and looking as sharp as ever.
The contemporary reinterpretation bears updated features such as a bezel-free glass box Carrera, a curved flange dial and counter colours tuned for higher contrast and better legibility during yacht racing. Within the 39mm case lies the TH20-06 movement, with bi-directional winding and an 80-hour power reserve.
The new Carrera Skipper will join TAG Heuer’s core collection as the flagship model for more sailing-inspired watches to come.
Panerai Luna Rossa
The Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team is gearing up for Prada Cup in hopes of becoming the challenger team to face off against the incumbent Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in the 37th America’s Cup, set to take place in Barcelona, October 2024. As the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team’s official sponsor, Panerai has released its new Luna Rossa collection which combines the technical qualities of yachting and the materials used in racing boas with the aesthetic code of the team.
Blue for the ocean and red for Luna Rossa’s official colour can be seen on the 40mm Luminor Luna Rossa Quaranta, the 40mm Luminor Luna Rossa Quaranta BiTempo, and the limited 37-piece 44mm Luminor Luna Rossa Chrono Carbotech which features the tachymeter scale as a tribute to sailing. Being an Experience edition, the last model offers a curated immersion experience in Cagliari, on the Italian island of Sardinia. All three models come with a bi-material strap emblazoned with the Luna Rossa logo.
Tudor Pelagos
Last year, Tudor became Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s main partner for the 37th America’s Cup. To mark the partnership and Tudor’s first steps into the world of competitive yacht racing, the watchmaker has unveiled two yachting inspired Pelagos FXD models. The Alinghi Red Bull Racing Edition pieces, a chronograph and a time-only watch, bear cases specially crafted from titanium, stainless steel as well as carbon composite, an analogue of the carbon fibre hull and mast of the boat.
The matte dial is dressed in the same deep blue as the team yacht’s hull; with red accents on the second hand and circumscribing the subdials matching the red stripes on the hull. The watches are fitted with manufacture calibres MT5602 for the Pelagos FXD and MT5813 for the Pelagos FXD Chrono, both “weekend-proof” movements with power reserves to tide them over from Friday evening to the following Monday morning.
