Tesla really doesn’t want people flipping the Cybertruck.
The EV maker is going after owners who try to sell the electric pickup for a quick profit, according to a user on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum. The company maybe even be considering banning offending parties from ever buying one of its vehicles again.
Over the last two weeks, the first Cybertrucks have started popping up for sale with asking prices well over sticker price. This does not appear to have not gone over too well at Tesla. And now, the company is stepping in to stop a second-hand Cybertruck market from forming before the vehicle goes into “volume” production.
On Sunday, a Cybertruck Owners Club member posted (via InsideEVs) that the EV maker had reached out to them about their attempt to sell their Cybertruck. The user said they had not sold their vehicle but had listed it on multiple websites to see what the market was like. That was more than enough to catch the attention of Tesla.
At that point, the user says their local Tesla “store leader” reached out and informed them that their reservations for two additional Cybertrucks had been cancelled and that all associated fees were being fully refunded. The employee also informed the user that any other attempt to order the Cybertruck (and possibly any other Tesla) would be cancelled without refund, suggesting to the user that they had been “blacklisted.”
“Moving forward, any future orders placed by you will be cancelled without a refund of the $100 reservation or $250 order fee as official notification has been provided to you regarding the matter,” the store leader reportedly wrote.
Tesla did not respond to a request for comment from Robb Report.
While the Cybertruck Owners Club user seems to have been taken aback by Tesla’s response, they shouldn’t be. It has been widely reported that the Cybertruck Motor Vehicle Purchase Agreement includes an “anti-flipping” clause (which was removed and then reinstated before the end of the year). The contract states that owners who sell the EV within the first year of ownership might not ever be able to buy one of the company’s vehicles again. It now appears that the language is no idle threat.
