Who better to develop a superyacht for the next generation than an up-and-coming talent?
Italian designer Davide Benaglia has just unveiled an innovative 220-footer that caters to the needs of young digital natives. The industry newcomer developed the aptly named Hype-R for Feadship’s Young Designer of the Year Award. The entrants, all of whom were under 28 years of age, were asked to create “futuristic” vessels with environmental innovations, cutting-edge technology, and workable layouts. Benaglia didn’t win the competition—Pradipta R. Hakim of Indonesia scored top honors—but his concept is still an interesting one.
Hype-R showcases a sleek, minimalist exterior inspired by video game controllers and other gear. The yacht also features flowing lines and dramatic curves that evoke a sports car. “My design language is strongly influenced by car designs, particularly by the renowned masters who have made history, such as Pininfarina and Giugiaro,” Benaglia said in a statement. “Technological products also inspire my designs.”
With a beam of nearly 37 feet and an interior volume of 1,300 GT, Hype-R offers ample space for relaxing and entertaining onboard. The layout has been meticulously designed to ensure that each space serves a specific function, according to Benaglia. The sundeck, for instance, is dedicated to the owner and includes a suite with a plush living area and a private study for remote working at sea. In addition, the yacht is equipped with two staterooms and two VIPs that can sleep up to eight guests.
The exterior has an array of distinct zones, too. The upper deck is ripe for chilling, with a dreamy sunset lounge and romantic arches. Conversely, the modular beach area aft can be used as a cinema, a discotheque, or a tranquil lounge by the water’s edge. The aft deck is also home to a striking, asymmetrical pool that cascades over two levels and fold-out platforms that open to create more space as needed.
Hype-R is, of course, replete with innovative features that will appeal to tech-savvy seafarers, such as state-of-the-art entertainment equipment and a high-tech hybrid propulsion system. The diesel-electric setup enables the yacht to reach a top speed of 19 knots and a cruising speed of 16 knots while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
A superyacht for the next generation, indeed.
