This New Camper Shell Lets You Sleep on the Roof of Your Rivian

It’s about to get a lot easier to take the Rivian R1T camping.

Super Pacific is expanding its lineup of X1 canopy camper shells to include a model compatible with the battery-powered pickup. The attachment has everything you need, including a roof-top tent, to live out of the EV maker’s truck.

The Oregon-based camping company announced plans earlier this week to engineer a new version of its flagship camper that will fit into the bed of the R1T. The company has identified a few modifications that will be necessary to support the new fitment. It will be the company’s first camper for an all-electric vehicle, and one imagines that modifications will be necessary to reduce stress on the vehicle’s battery pack. The R1T’s range falls between 270 and 410 miles, depending on powertrain and battery options.

“We’ve been eyeing the EV market for a while now and we are super stoked to kick off the Rivian development!” Super Pacific co-founder and CEO Peter Williams said in a statement.

Super Pacific’s announcement was light on technical details but the current X1—which is compatible with the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, and Ram 1500, among others—offers up a pretty good idea of what to expect. At the heart of the camper is a multi-purpose space with full side access that doubles as a storage locker or living room on the road. It comes with modular molle panels, secure storage compartments, and built-in wiring and solar ports so you can customize the area any way you want. The exterior is also equipped with T-slots so you can rig up an awning or solar panel array.

The camper’s most vital feature, especially if you struggle to sleep sitting down, is the roof-mounted tent, or “XL Sleeping Loft,” which has more than enough room for two adults on its comfortable Exped Megamat Duo LW+ mattress. Burly marine-grade fabric, adjustable screen doors, and venting mean you can comfortably sleep in the space any time of year, rain or shine.

Super Pacific says it will begin building the X1 for the R1T once it receives 10 reservations. That shouldn’t take too long, since the company claims it’s already received plenty of interest from Rivian owners. It hasn’t said how much the final camper will cost, but reservation holders will only be on the hook for $14,495, the current price of the X1, part of which will be covered by their deposit. The company expects to begin delivering the camper in the fourth quarter of this year.
