Winch Design’s latest creation proves that style and sustainability are not mutually exclusive.
The international firm, which works on projects for the air, land, and sea, has just unveiled a superyacht interior at the intersection of high design and sustainable living.
The vessel itself is the third hull in Cantiere delle Marche’s Flexplorer 146 series. The 144-foot explorer was designed for an eco-conscious owner “with a deep commitment to nature.” He and his young family plan to spend a significant amount of time on the yacht, and thus it needed to support their ecological lifestyle.
Paying homage to Mother Earth, the interior will showcase exclusively natural, non-toxic, and eco-friendly materials. (Each one was analyzed to ensure minimal impact on the environment.) Earthy colors and organic textures will be used throughout to create a raw yet refined feel. Natural wooden floors by Mafi will lay underfoot, further adding to the clean, chemical-free environment.
The unconventional green materials are arguably the best part, though. The living quarters feature carpets made from recycled fishing nets and textured eggshell walls. (Some 275,000 tons of eggshells are amassed annually across the globe as a byproduct of the food industry, but can be cleverly repurposed for interior design through a roasting and coloring process.) In addition, woven grass runs across the ceiling domes while reclaimed seashell composite adorns all bathrooms.
Another highlight is the green living wall. Made from preserved moss, the verdant installation acts as a focal point on the staircase. The furniture also doubles as art, showcasing a mix of palm leather and recycled wood chips.
As you might expect, the yacht’s engineering also places a strong emphasis on sustainability. Most notably, the vessel meets the rigorous IMO Tier-III emissions standards, which means it can cruise in protected waters. Winch says the interior outfitting contractor was also selected based on its carbon-neutral business model.
“Our studio has an important agenda to change our clients’ perception of conscious luxury, and we have a wonderful opportunity in this project to make a significant step forward,” Winch’s creative director Jim Dixon said in a statement.
The explorer yacht is due to launch in 2025. Stay tuned.
