Rivian is really getting into the holiday spirit this year.
The company’s latest over-the-air update for its EVs includes a pair of playful “costumes.” The feature allows the company’s battery-powered truck and SUV to take on the guise of two of science fiction’s most famous vehicles—K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider and the DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future.
No, Rivian hasn’t turned the R1T and R1S into Transformers, but the company may have figured out the next best thing. The new update utilizes exterior and interior lighting, cabin features, and the Rivian app to recreate the feel being inside two of the more beloved cars in big and small screen history.
The costumes are triggered by opening the company’s EV app and choosing to put the EV into either “K.I.T.T.” or “Time Machine” mode. The first transforms the infotainment display into a recreation of the robotic Pontiac Tran-Am’s diagnostic screen and plays Knight Rider’s iconic theme song over the sound system. The second recreates the center console setup from the movie version of the DMC-12, including the Plutonium Chamber gauge, and plays the theme and sound effects of the Michael J. Fox-starring classic. And if you have a 2025 R1T or R1S, there’s even more fun to be had. The “K.I.T.T.” costume turns the headlights into a glow red bar, while “Time Machine” features an “88 mph” button that plays a light show.
The sci-fi-inspired costumes aren’t all the new update has to offer. There’s also a “Trunk or Treat” costume. This mode features a number of different spooky sound effects and allows drivers to choose between three color themes that mix purple, yellow, red, and green. The infotainment screen will also display a haunted version of the Rivian operating system. Other fun options include the ability to change the sound of the horn so that it resembles an owl’s hoot, as well as a new suite of graphics for the digital instrument cluster. This last feature changes pedestrians to zombies and bicyclists and motorcyclists to headless horsemen, among other things.
If you’re interested in dressing up your Rivian for Halloween, you’ll want to download the new update ASAP. The spooky season-themed update will only be available through Monday, November 4.
